Applications are now open for Girls Lead, a mentorship program designed to inspire and empower girls across Illinois to pursue careers in public service.
This marks the second year of the Office of Lt. Governor's Girls Lead initiative, which was met with overwhelming enthusiasm in its inaugural year.
The program, part of the Illinois Council on Women and Girls (ICWG) and supported by the Illinois State Board of Education, offers tailored experiences for different age groups:
5th grade students will spend a day shadowing a woman leader in state government.
6th to 8th grade participants will have a similar shadowing experience, followed by a reflection activity.
High school students (9th to 12th grade) will engage in a semester-long policy mentorship, including research projects and multiple days of hands-on experience in government offices.
Mentors will include women legislators in the Illinois General Assembly, Agency Directors, and senior-level managers from various state departments.
Who should apply?
Students who demonstrate a strong desire to learn about the inner workings of state government. Scoring of applications will not be grade-based; instead, applicants will be judged on a scale emphasizing diverse achievements, personal resilience, examples of leadership (any size or shape), and community contributions.
Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. Oct. 20.
Applications are open and interested individuals can apply at bit.ly/GirlsLead2024.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: Sunday, October 20th from 9 a.m. to Noon
Hi there AHHS Friends of Hackmatack volunteers!
Our next event is this Sunday, October 20th from 9 a.m. to Noon. We will continue to remove brush and some small trees from a small grove on the site being restored to wet prairie and sedge meadow wetland.
If you have been to an Otrebla stewardship day, you know that it is a long walk, first over mowed lawn and then through dense wetland vegetation. Access to the property will be via a private landowner's property on the east side of Route 47, one mile north of St. Charles Road north of Woodstock. The address is 3314 Route 47, Woodstock IL 60098. We have been instructed to park near the radio cell tower. As always, look for the Hackmatack signs!
Wear clothes and shoes that can get dirty, and please bring your own drinking water. Protective clothing such as long pants (not leggings) are recommended. We’ll have hand tools, workgloves, safety glasses, and a few snacks.
An RSVP is appreciated, so if you know you will be attending please give me a heads up. Students are welcome! If you are under age 18, you will need a parent or guardian to sign the waiver form (link below) indicating that you are authorized to attend; you can either email the signed form back to me or bring it to the workday. Note that this is a different waiver form than our usual refuge form because we are working off of the refuge at this event. Also, the parent/guardian signs in the line labeled "volunteer"; the minor does not need to sign.

Alden-Hebron High School Students Attend MCC College Fair! 🎓
On October 10, 2024, Alden-Hebron High School students participated in the MCC College Fair. College and Career Fairs offer fantastic opportunities for students to gather information, make valuable connections with potential schools and careers, and help narrow down options as they plan for their post-secondary journey!
Kate Weber shared, "My favorite part was how nice and informative the representatives were. If their college didn’t offer what I was looking for, they pointed me in the right direction. There was also a lot of variety in terms of majors, location, price, and student population."
Nick Heber added, "I learned about several schools close and far that range in different levels of GPA, what they provide in engineering, and housing at each college level."
Joe Higgins said, "It was nice to talk to the representatives of the colleges and see where they are located."

AHHS College Visits:
For high school students exploring various post-secondary options, it’s highly recommended to take part in in-person or virtual campus visits to get a true feel for the schools.
AHHS senior, Rileigh Gaddini, recently visited the University of Illinois and shared her experience:
"Initially, I did not want to tour this school as I didn't want to attend a school with more than 15,000 students. Regardless, my dad signed me up for a tour. When I got there, I was suddenly thrilled that I went on the tour. I loved the campus. The university does a phenomenal job of making a large campus feel small. It creates a vibrant atmosphere while maintaining peace throughout the campus. Now, the University of Illinois is my top choice for school after graduation. In the picture, I am standing in front of the Alma Mater statue, which is a tradition for when you go on your first tour."
