Hi There, AH Friends of Hackmatack Volunteers!
We have a major garlic mustard infestation at our Schaid Savanna site on the Hackmatack refuge, and we need your help to pull it! This beautiful oak grove is currently undergoing restoration. The plants are as big as bushes, but they come out easily. Temps should be in the 60s or even the 70s, so come on out and lend a hand while enjoying spring on the refuge!
The access to the site is via a small lane off of Route 47. There are actually two lanes off of Route 47 at this location; turn into the lane that is furthest south. (The north lane is private and goes into some residences.) The turn-in lane is a bit hard to see, but look for the Hackmatack signs! The small lane into the site is located on the west side of Route 47, 4.6 miles south of Route 173 in Hebron, and 6.1 miles north of Route 120 in Woodstock. The turn-in lane is also 0.5 miles south of Thayer Road and just south of the Hackmatack parking lot on Route 47 and the bridge. The coordinates for the turn off road are: 42.4068644, -88.4382569. Here is a map showing the access point off of Route 47: https://maps.app.goo.gl/FRqrh1MpoKbhQ35X6 We will park on one side of the small lane so other vehicles can drive in. You may want to turn your car around once you arrive. If we get alot of people you may have to park in the lot just north of the bridge and walk back.
Please note that all volunteers must have signed the attached waiver in order to work on the refuge in 2025. If you have signed the form already, you are good for the entire year. We welcome students! If you are under the age of 18 you will need to have a parent or guardian sign the attached waiver.
Bring bug spray and drinking water. I will have some gloves, yard waste bags for the garlic mustard, and a few snacks. We hope to see you there!

🌟 Future 6th Grade Presentation & Tour – A Giant Success! 🌟
On April 30th, our 5th-grade students got a sneak peek into middle school life during a special presentation and campus tour! They met the 6th-grade teaching team, explored the school, and had questions answered—all to help ease the transition and build excitement for this next big step. The day wrapped up with lunch, where students got to try items from the main and à la carte menu—always a hit! A giant shoutout to AHHS's amazing Student Ambassadors. These leaders shared practical advice and positive encouragement to help our future 6th graders feel confident and ready.
💚🤍💚 We’re so proud of our future middle schoolers and can’t wait to welcome the Class of 2032 this fall!
