Dear District 19 Families,
District 19 apologizes for the technical issues that occurred with the audio during our recent board meeting. We understand the importance of clear and effective communication during our meetings, especially given the significance of the topics discussed. We are working to correct the audio problems to prevent any recurrence in the future.
Please see below for the latest Transportation update:
Dousman Transportation Company will be ready to serve our students this coming Wednesday. I would like to clarify a couple of items. Nothing has changed as it concerns the number of routes we will run. For the last 6 years we have run 4 regular routes and our tech campus route for a total of 5 routes. These same 5 routes are still being run this year with Dousman Transportation.
Our buses will be stored at Dousman Transportation, with the exception of two buses for this school year.
As for the length of bus rides and bus times: Dousman Transportation scheduled every student that qualifies for bussing. The length of the route and bus times will tighten up as they learn who does and doesn't ride a bus.
As with the beginning of every new school year times are adjusted. Thank you for your understanding. An updated list of bus stops and times will be posted on Monday, so there is time to ask questions if needed.
Summary of the statement by our Board Member Brandon Berg:
Due to the leadership retiring in our transportation department in January, the board decided to look at all of our transportation options including looking at outsourcing transportation. It was at that time we decided not to move forward with a transportation service due to the additional cost and proceeded to hire and promote a new transportation Director to maintain district-run transportation. Fast forward to the second week in July when we had three of our drivers leave for a different school district making our only option out-sourcing transportation. Nationwide one of the most challenging positions to staff for schools is bus driver so we knew that with the time we had until school began our only option was to go with a school bus service. There was no way we were going to find, hire, develop, and train three bus drivers prior to the start of the school year. Dousman immediately responded to our call and needs. To clarify we still own the buses and we’re still supplying all the fuel for the buses to go on route. In fact, we purchased a new bus for $117,000. We are under a one-year contract with Dousman and still have two drivers that will be driving for the district with our own vehicles. We currently have a job requisition open to hire additional drivers and it is still our hope that we can staff additional bus drivers to bring our busing back in-house at some point.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
With Giant Pride,
Tiffany Elswick
